It is a pleasure to welcome you to St. Martin of Tours, a Catholic school serving children in grades TK-8. We are a part of the Parish of St. Martin of Tours, located in the Brentwood community of Los Angeles. Our school has been supporting excellence in Catholic education since its founding in 1954. This year we commemorate the school’s 60th anniversary. Whether you are a new visitor or a returning member of the St. Martin family, we invite you to come and join us as we celebrate our sixty year tradition of academic excellence, and as we build upon this legacy to innovate for the future.
Following in the footsteps of our patron, Saint Martin, our school is characterized by a commitment to educating the whole child—mind, heart and spirit—in partnership with parents. This holistic education includes a rigorous preparation in the classical and modern liberal arts and sciences. Students at St. Martin’s study advanced math, laboratory science, and learn critical reading and writing skills that will prepare them to be future leaders and good citizens. They study Latin, modern language and literature, and they practice forming their characters for lives of faith, thought, and service. Students graduate from St. Martin of Tours well prepared to attend the region’s most prestigious secondary schools.
In 1954 when the school opened, it was staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet. Now primarily staffed by dedicated and caring lay teachers, the school continues the traditions of hospitality and charity characteristic of its founders. For the last twenty-five years the school was under the wise and capable leadership of Mrs. Cecile Oswald as principal. Mrs. Oswald is well known and loved by generations of Saint Martin family members, who appreciate her singular dedication to fostering the growth of the school. We hope that her spirit and continued presence will remain a blessing for the school for many years to come.
I am pleased to join the school community this year as its new principal. Born and raised in California, I have returned with my family to my home state after twenty-five years in Canada and New England. Remarkably, many signposts along the way have been pointing me towards a community under the patronage of St. Martin, who is commonly regarded as a key figure in the intellectual and spiritual heritage of Western culture. Martin was a reluctant soldier, scholar and church leader, who dedicated his life courageously to Christian thought and service. Indeed, he is most often represented in medieval art by the image of a Roman soldier cutting his cloak in half for a beggar. Born in what is now Eastern Europe, he traveled widely, eventually founding a monastic community and serving as bishop of a city at the heart of French culture. For the last two decades, as a scholar, teacher, and administrator, and as a Catholic school parent, I have been dedicated to serving the cause of academic excellence, faithful life, and service that is central to Saint Martin’s vision of the good life.
In the same way I have been welcomed to St. Martin of Tours, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you. Come learn more about our school by taking a campus tour and meeting some of the faculty, students and parents who make up this exceptional community. Our website provides a small window into the many facets of school life, but a personal visit is the best way to get to know us better. We look forward to meeting you.
